Exams can be taken at basic or advanced levels and can be taken by course goers or self-learners alike. The scope of the exam is determined by subject specifications which form part of the education programmes for adults.

In each of the exams, all language skills are assessed. Assessment is carried out in written and oral forms and the exam is assessed as a whole.

At basic level, candidates have to show that they:

  • understand essential and relevant important or interesting information in less demanding written and spoken texts on general topics;
  • understand and take part in conversations on everyday topics;
  • write informal and semi-formal letters and simpler texts.

At advanced level, candidates have to show that they:

  • have a good range of vocabulary in a range of everyday situations;
  • have a good understanding of authentic written and spoken texts of various genres on informative and general topics, also complex ones;
  • have a good understanding of other participants in conversations and are capable of conducting spontaneous and uninterrupted conversations on everyday topics;
