National Assessment of Knowlegde (NAK) Sessions
At the end of Period 2, the NAK can be taken only in the First Session, and at the end of Period 3 in the First and Second Sessions. The Second Session is only for pupils who failed to attend the First Session due to an illness or other specific reasons.

Subjects
Pupils in Year 6 sit the NAK in:

• Slovene or Hungarian or Italian;
• a modern foreign language (English or German);
• Mathematics.

Pupils in Year 9 sit the NAK in:

• Slovene or Hungarian or Italian;
• Mathematics;
• a third subject determined each year by the Minister from the selection of compulsory subjects in Years 8 and 9 (Art Education, Biology, Chemistry, Citizenship and Ethics , Design and Technology, English, Geography, German, History, Musical Education, Physical Education, Physics).

Pupils, who are schooled in the educational programme with the lower educational standard, sit the NAK at the end of Period 3 in:

• Slovene or Hungarian or Italian;
• Mathematics;
• a third subject determined each year by the Minister (Science or Social Science). 

From the 1st September 2008 onwards, pupils from the programme with the lower educational standard, are able to voluntarily sit the NAK after Period 2 (Year 6) in:

•  Slovene or Hungarian or Italian;
•  Mathematics.

Protection of Pupils' rights – Inspection and Appeal
Pupils are informed about their achievement in the NAK at their schools. On the day of the results, pupils and their parents have the right to see their marked tests in individual subjects at the school. Teachers and pupils check whether or not tests were marked in accordance with the marking scheme. Each school allots time also for parents. When in the presence of a teacher the parents are informed of their child's achievements. If a pupil or parent has any doubts about the reliability of marking or if they discover an irregularity in the awarding of points, they can carry out an appeal. An appeal is a judgement about whether or not tasks are marked in accordance with the marking scheme and guidelines. At the end of Period 2, the appeal is carried out at the school. At the end of Period 3, however, the head-teacher takes tests that are subject to an appeal to the regional department of the National Education Institute, where the chief examiner or their assistants check for any mistakes in assessment. The Centre enters any changes of marks into its database; this data is the basis for the preparation of analyses of achievement.
